Originally a biologist, Torsten previously founded NaturalMotion, an Oxford University spin-off and one of the UK’s most successful games and technology start-ups. In 2014, NaturalMotion was acquired by Zynga for $527m. He is an active technology and biotech investor and has spoken at TED, TED Global, Google Zeitgeist and the Apple iPhone 5 keynote. Torsten was included in MIT’s Top 100 Innovators, is a member of the Munich Security Conference Innovation Board, and in 2016 was awarded an honorary doctorate from Sussex University for his contribution to the UK’s technology sector. Torsten holds a BA in Biological Sciences from Oxford University, a Masters in Artificial Intelligence, and was a Guy Newton scholar while researching for his PhD at Oxford.
Dr. Gundbert Scherf
Co-Founder and President/ COO of Helsing
Gundbert’s professional mission is to make technology work for the purpose of our democratic defence and security institutions. As Commissioner in the German Ministry of Defence, Gundbert stepped up the “Cyber and Information Domain Command”, a new military service for the information domain, as well as the new digital Directorate-General for the MoD. In the years prior to founding Helsing, Gundbert was a Partner with McKinsey & Company advising governments and corporates on strategy and technology. Gundbert in 2016 and 2017 was selected by “Capital” magazine in their “40 under 40” list. A passionate European, Gundbert completed graduate and post-graduate studies at the University of Cambridge (Marie Curie Fellow), the Freie Universität Berlin, and Sciences Po, Paris. A transatlanticist at heart, Gundbert is also a Member of the Atlantik-Brücke.
Co-founder and Chief Product Officer (CPO) of Helsing
Niklas Koehler is leading the product and the AI teams. After graduating in physics from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, he started his PhD at Helmholtz Zentrum Gesundheit und Umwelt in the machine learning group of Prof. Dr. Dr. Fabian Theis and published scientific AI papers in world-leading journals and magazines, such as Nature, Nature Communications, and Nature Machine Intelligence. Niklas is a prize winner of one of the largest Machine Learning competitions with a total prize money of $1 million and over 10,000 international participants. Prior to founding Helsing, Niklas had founded and managed an AI technology and research company, that worked with leading defense companies and in defense-related projects.
Dr. Robert Fink
CTO at Helsing
Robert is responsible for all aspects of technology and software development at Helsing, including recruiting, platform architecture, engineering culture, and education. Robert is a trusted thought partner for our customers and industry partners and a regular speaker at industry and academic conferences. Prior to joining Helsing, Robert was a distinguished software engineer at Palantir Technologies and the founding engineer and chief architect of Palantir’s Foundry Platform. Robert holds a PhD in database theory (University of Oxford, UK), and Diplom degrees in physics and computer science (University of Munich, Germany). Robert is a competitive sailor, a passionate cook, a telemark skier, and he sewed his wife’s wedding dress.
Nick Elliott CB MBE
CEO of Helsing UK
Nick is an experienced business leader who has led major delivery organisations in government, defence and infrastructure. Most recently, as Director General of the UK Vaccine Taskforce, he ran what has been described as the most successful component of the United Kingdom’s response to the covid-19 pandemic. As a British Army officer, he commanded a bomb disposal squadron and a combat engineer regiment on operations worldwide. In subsequent senior business roles, he has been responsible for delivering some of the biggest rail infrastructure projects in the UK and was Deputy CEO of Defence Equipment & Support, the specialist acquisition and support organisation of the UK MOD. Nick is a non-executive director with the global programme management consultancy Turner & Townsend and has previously served as a non-executive director on the Board of the Submarine Delivery Agency and as a Council Member of the Rail Supply Group. He is a military reservist in the Staff Corps, a reserve unit of business leaders who provide specialist advice to the Armed Forces.
Deputy CEO UK and Director of Partnerships and Programmes
James is a former diplomat, strategy consultant, corporate financier, and advisor on technology and geopolitics. He leads our engagement with partners and major programmes in the UK, as deputy CEO. His career focus has been in contributing to UK national security and the security of our closest democratic allies, with institutions including the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and McKinsey & Company. He has advised some of the largest corporations in the world on challenges at the intersection of technology, national security, and geopolitics, most recently as a partner in a leading strategic advisory firm. He also leads various initiatives on artificial intelligence and global strategy at the University of Oxford, where he is chair of the alumni board.
