- Joint development work will focus on Vision-Language-Action models
- Significant step in strengthening Europe’s technological leadership in AI and defence
Paris, February 10th, 2025 – Helsing, the European defence technology company, and Mistral AI, the leader in Europe for large language models, are today announcing a strategic partnership to jointly develop next-generation AI systems for the defence of Europe.
Unveiled at the Paris Global AI Summit, the partnership combines Helsing’s expertise in AI-powered military technology, including its Ukraine-deployed strike drones or Eurofighter electronic warfare capabilities, with Mistral’s well known world-class generative AI models, to enhance human-AI collaboration on the battlefield.
The joint development work will focus on Vision-Language-Action models, enabling defence platforms to understand their environment, communicate naturally with operators, and allow for faster, more reliable decisions in complex scenarios.
Gundbert Scherf, co-founder of Helsing, said: “Europe needs to assert its strength as a geopolitical actor, and AI leadership is the key to that strength and Europe’s future security and prosperity. As Europe’s fastest and most ambitious companies in the space, we will advance this leadership for the next generation of defence systems. "
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, said: "With our partnership with Helsing, Europe is poised to take a significant step forward in asserting its technological leadership in AI. Mistral AI’s versatile models are instrumental in developing a new generation of defence systems, ensuring Europe's strategic advantage in the global landscape."
Antoine Bordes, VP of AI at Helsing, said: "The future of defence will be shaped by AI-powered systems working together with humans in the physical world. Robotics and AI will revolutionise how defence operations are conducted—improving efficiency, reducing risks and enabling rapid decision-making in high-stakes environments”.
